Scaling and root planing, commonly known as deep cleanings, is a highly effective and frequently recommended procedure for addressing the early stages of gum disease. This therapeutic treatment consists of two integral steps:

  • Scaling: During the scaling process, the removal of plaque and tartar (dental calculus) from the tooth surfaces takes place. This buildup of plaque and tartar contains harmful bacteria that can lead to gum inflammation and, if left untreated, progress into more severe gum disease.
  • Root Planing: The subsequent step involves meticulously cleaning the roots of the teeth. This procedure aims to smooth the root surfaces, eliminating bacterial toxins and creating a clean environment for the gums to reattach to the teeth.

The primary objectives of scaling and root planing are the removal of bacterial elements, plaque and tartar, along with preventing the advancement of gum disease. In the majority of cases, this treatment can be comfortably administered without the need for anesthesia. However, our skilled dental hygienist can provide various anesthetic and comfort options to ensure your ease throughout the procedure. Depending on the extent of your condition, the scaling and root planing process may be distributed across multiple appointments, concentrating on one section of the mouth during each visit.

In some cases, combining scaling and root planing with other periodontal therapies like antibiotic treatment might be recommended. For many individuals, scaling and root planing prove sufficient to arrest the progression of periodontal disease.
